About Beit Hashiryon and the Tank:

*בית השריון בעברית

Beit Hashiryon was inaugurated in 1965 and still serves today as a hostel and welfare club for lone soldiers – next to it stands one of the neighborhood’s most recognizable monuments – a Sherman M50 tank. During my research, I discovered that the tank currently on display is not the original tank placed in the 1960s.
The missing tank – Cromwell:
In an article published in the Maariv newspaper in 1966 about the celebrations of Armored Corps Day in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Sinai Campaign, it is stated that the type of tank is a ‘Cromwell’, which was one of the first tanks operated by the IDF in the battles of the War of Independence.
The current tank – Sherman:
According to Google Lens and a seemingly innocent Wikipedia page, the tank in question is a Sherman M50, an IDF development based on the American Sherman M4 tank. Its first baptism of fire was in the Sinai Campaign, almost a decade after the War of Independence.
Who knows what happened to the Cromwell tank? And who placed the Sherman M50? Not me

How to get there:
From Yagel Alon Street near the sports hall, turn east onto 1247 Street, which is shaded by giant ficus trees. Stop when you see a tank, it’s hard to miss it.
The second option is to turn left from La Guardia Street onto Lohamei Gallipoli Street, pass a traffic circle with a psychedelic olive tree in the center (only at night), pass a green playground on your left and the scout movement building until you reach the Sherman.
